BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

The Rev. Craig A. Phillips, Ph.D. is a part-time Lecturer in Theology at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. In the Fall of 2025, he will teach two classes on “The Writings of St. Paul.” In the Fall of 2023, he taught two classes of “Biblical Theology.” In the Fall of 2022, he was a Lecturer in the Humanities, teaching the college’s core humanities curriculum, Conversatio. Craig is the former rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, Virginia, serving in this position from October 2002 to September 30, 2021.

Craig graduated from Brown University with majors in Religious Studies and Classics. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School in 1979.

From 1979-1980 he worked as a Chaplain Intern at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City, where he received advanced standing in the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education. From 1980 to 1984 Craig served in the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma as the Vicar of Trinity, Eufaula and St. Lawrence, Muskogee. From 1984 to 1986, Craig was the Associate Rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Ladue, in the Diocese of Missouri.

In the fall of 1986, Craig began doctoral work in Theology and Ethics at Duke University, and in December 1993 he received his Ph.D. While working on his doctorate, Craig served as the Interim Rector of St. Titus Episcopal Church, Durham; Church of the Nativity, Raleigh; St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Pittsboro; Interim Assistant at Church of the Good Shepherd, Raleigh; and Interim Episcopal Chaplain at North Carolina State University. During this time, he also taught undergraduate courses for three semesters at Duke University and for two semesters at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

From 1994 to 1997 Craig worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Religion at Temple University, teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses. In 1997, Craig became the rector of Incarnation Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.

In the Diocese of Virginia, Craig served as the Chair of the Diocesan Board of Examining Chaplains and on the Commission on Ministry from 2003 until November 2022. He also served on the Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Commission and the Lutheran-Episcopal Coordinating Committee of the Metropolitan D. C. area. He is the former Dean of Region 3 in the Diocese of Virginia and the former Dean of the Conestoga Deanery in the Diocese of Pennsylvania. He served as adjunct faculty member at Virginia Theological Seminary for many years and taught in the seminary’s Evening School of Theology. Craig is a former member of the Bioethics Committee of Virginia Hospital Center and of the board of the Love Quilt Project, at first affiliated with St. Peter’s, Arlington, but now an independent 5013C non-profit organization.

Craig has also taught as a Professorial Lecturer at Georgetown University and in the Accelerated Degree Program at Rosement College in Pennsylvania.

Craig is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Society of Biblical Literature, The Bibliographical Society of America, and an active participant in the Ecclesiological Investigations International Research Network. He has contributed articles and chapters to numerous academic books and journals.
